Glamour and Anti-Glamour

Glen was working again today so I continued my exploration of Toronto. I didn’t go far though, just down to the Ryerson Image Centre. They had a couple of exhibitions on that close on Sunday, so I thought I may as well check out them, especially as they’re free.

I cycled down to the university. Even though the weather is getting warmer, it was still a bit chilly on my ride, and I should have worn gloves. My hands were frozen by the time I arrived (all of a 12 minute cycle-ride).

One exhibition was called Burn With Desire: Photography and Glamour, which used iconic studio portraits of Hollywood’s Golden Age to provide an historical overview of photography’s role in defining a visual lexicon of beauty and allure.

Lots of photos of Marilyn Monroe, then people like Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Marlon Brando…basically people in the song Vogue. Seeing them all together, you do recognise the style that the photographers and the movie studios were going for, and how that’s influenced our perceptions of glamour and (mostly feminine) sensuality.

In the gallery opposite was Anti-Glamour: Portraits of Women which took a more post-modern approach, displayed various artists and how they interpret femininity in photography/film.

After that, I cycled home, made some more hot cross buns (they turned out better this time) and ate dinner. In the evening Julian came over and we watched Romantics Anonymous and The Mindy Project. Lazy Saturday evening 🙂

What do you say, eh?
