Glen and I ventured ‘out of the house’ tonight to attend a free screening of an Argentinian film called Wild Tales that was being put on by Now Toronto. I’d wanted to see the film at TIFF last year but we couldn’t get tickets so it was serendipitous that it was on again – and for free.
To be honest, I didn’t have high expectations of getting in to see it. I figured that with a population the size of Toronto’s that the line would be around the corner before we even arrived and it would be futile even staying. However, Glen and I risked it, leaving the house at quarter to eight and arriving at five past (we managed to get all the right public transport) and were about 110 in line. The first 100 got free popcorn.
We queued until after 8:30 (when they opened the doors). It wasn’t as cold as it has been over the past few days but it was still about -11°C. My toes were frozen by the time we actually got inside (and didn’t get free popcorn). We took our seats and settled in, not knowing exactly what to expect.
We loved it. It was an excellent black comedy which showed about five little unconnected stories. One was set on a plane, another in a diner, one in a city with a guy who’s just had enough, another at a wedding…each one crafting a story that had us laughing, cringing and gasping. There was a bit of gruesomeness in it, but done in a way that says, ‘This is life. It’s awful, but it’s awfully funny.’
We rushed out of the cinema as soon as the credits rolled, and then waited on the other side of the street for the streetcar to come. Toronto is looking pretty mushy at the moment with lots of snow piled up everywhere. It’s a bugger to walk around in, and I’m so glad we don’t drive in it. We got home just before midnight (with a pitstop for late night pizza for Glen), which, I’m sad to say, is a rarity for us on a ‘school night.’
Besides tonight’s movie, it’s been a fairly standard yet pleasant day. I finished off my latest round of revisions for my book and I’m about to send them off (before deadline, I might add). I went to the gym and did a good back workout (though worried I may have strained something now, which is not good as we’re going skiing on Saturday). Oh, and we also got our wedding photos last night.
They’re online if you’d like to have a look: http://sbp.pass.us/danielglen/c-f08dr1936567
There are a lot of them so it might take you a while to get through them. And there are side tabs which give you the option of viewing Ceremony, Formal Photos and Reception.
Glen tells me today is day 600. He’s happy about it, I’m less so. Means we’ve only got 100 and something left to go…

What do you say, eh?
