Pumpkin scones and the Grand Budapest Hotel

It’s been a pretty good week. Lots of things are happening or coming to fruition, which is keeping me busy, mildly stressed, but still feeling as if I’m getting somewhere.

On the writing side of things, there have been lots of exciting milestones. I revealed my book cover on Facebook and Twitter, garnering a lot of attention and “oohs” and “aahs”. I also received the head shots I had taken last week and have managed to whittle it down to a handful, which I’ll use for various purposes.

My book is now listed on GoodReads, which was an extremely pleasant surprise (I even have an ISBN now), and I’ve signed up as a “GoodReads author”. It’s not a huge thing but it’s just one more little notch on the publishing belt. I’ve also been talking to other authors I know and have started setting up guest blog spots for May (when the book comes out), and I’ve even got a few reviewers willing to review the book (a daunting prospect).

As for my business, a contact from back home got in touch earlier in the week and asked if I was available to help out on short notice. She needed someone to edit and/or rewrite text for some interpretive signage she’s developing for a client. I said yes and have spent some time working on that. It’s been great to flex that part of my brain again, and I’ve even learned a few new bits of history. Hopefully the client will be happy with what I’ve done.

I’ve also been approached to proofread a book, and then there’s a big lot of work I’m going to be doing for a regular client. The quote has been approved and I need to get cracking on that as I leave for Vancouver next Saturday for a couple of weeks. So it all seems to be coming at once.

However, I did manage to make pumpkin scones today in the Thermomix. My sister made them this week and told me about them, so I got a hankering for them. They remind me a lot of my childhood, when mum used to make them. The ones I made had maple syrup in them (replacing the white sugar) and they smelled divine coming out of the oven. I ate three. Glen’s eaten two. There aren’t many left for skiing tomorrow.

This evening we went to see The Grand Budapest Hotel at the movies with Pete, Royden and Anna. The cinema was packed (not surprising for Friday night) and we were three rows from the front. Despite the closeness, we loved the movie. I found it whimsical, poignant and beautifully crafted. I highly recommended it. Funny too!

We’re off skiing tomorrow so I’d best head to bed.

What do you say, eh?
