Friday was a chilled day. I went to the gym. I wrote nearly 4000 words of a story I’d put on hold. And my new tripod and GoPro head mount arrived in the post.
The tripod is pretty good and I’m looking forward to breaking it out to take photos of the Northern Lights when we’re in Iceland at Christmas. The head mount for the GoPro camera is also pretty cool. Going to use it when we go skiing and dog sledding and swimming with Beluga whales. Eeeeeeeeeee.
Friday night I didn’t feel like cooking so we went down the road to the pub on the corner, the Bishop and Belcher. It was packed but we got a table. We ordered bad food: I had fish and chips, Glen had nachos. It wasn’t bad tasting just not at all healthy. I don’t think we’ll go back.
We had considered going to a choir performance with Pete and Royden, our neighbours, later that night at Hart House but we piked. We were keen when we talked to them about it on Thursday night but when Friday evening came around it had lost it’s lustre.
We didn’t feel too bad though as Pete and Royden didn’t go either. Instead we went to their place and watched The Wolverine. Pete does what Glen does when he watches movies: asks what’s going on.
True, Glen and I had seen the movie, but I don’t like giving things in movies away so I wouldn’t tell him. When Glen does it, I haven’t seen the movie (though can usually guess what’s happening or going to happen) so it’s a bit of a bizarre thing to ask. But everyone’s got their quirks, right?
Consequently, we didn’t get to bed ’til late and this morning we didn’t get out of bed until 8am. I had this weird sensation while I was sleeping that I was waking up but didn’t want to so I refused and then it was like sleep sucked me back down into the darkness. Such a weird feeling, one I’ve never experienced (or remembered experiencing) before.
This morning I went to the gym for a while and then we went to Pete and Royden’s for brunch. Pancakes, turkey bacon, fruit, potatoes: delicious and so filling. Way too much food but it was wonderful. We hung out for a while there. Pete’s got a program on his iPad called Paper which you can draw things on so I was having a play with that, using this special stylus he’s got too.
In the afternoon we went to St Lawrence Market to buy vegetables from the farmers’ market and then some chicken and fish, before whiling away the afternoon reading (I finished the last book in a seven book series called The Death Gate Cycle – so good) and going for a dip in the hot tub.
In the evening we had tickets to one of Glen’s imaging-related work functions at the Sheraton. Originally more people Glen knew were supposed to be going but they pulled out (or weren’t actually going) at the last minute. The fear that we wouldn’t know anyone started to creep in.
It got worse when we arrived at the Sheraton and everyone we saw was in formal wear: evening dresses and suits. What were we wearing? I wore red chino type pants and a chequered shirt. Glen worn jeans and a short sleeved shirt. We definitely didn’t look part of the crew.
And then of course we didn’t know anyone. We got a drink and plonked ourselves down at table 38, which was in the bottom right hand corner of the room, the furtherest table, the one closest to the door, and we sat in the seats against the wall. Certainly sends a message doesn’t it.
But it turned out to be a good night. A couple sat at our table who we didn’t know and we chatted to them throughout the night. We’ve exchanged numbers and might go to the aquarium together. Nehal was there (one of the radiology fellows) which was great and there were some other radiologists that Glen knew too. We had some wine, food was good, and the small company we had turned out to be just right.
We’ll have to remember that next time we inexplicably go to a work function and think we’ll hate it.
Though the music on the dance floor wasn’t bad, most of our group turned into pumpkins at 10pm and we flitted away.
We took a quick detour outside the Town Hall where the ice rink was being fully utilised underneath a whole lot of Christmas lights. If I’d been wearing proper cold weather gear, it would have been fun to go for a spin. As it was, I was wearing a dinner jacket and a scarf by way of additional cover. My ears felt like they were going to snap off. We left but promised we’d be back.
Now it’s time for bed. Night all.

What do you say, eh?
