Belugas, birthday and back

Plans for swimming with Beluga whales have progressed very well. Accommodation is booked and the snorkelling trip is too. We can book other tours while we’re up there, like checking out the Fort, the estuary, and maybe even seeing polar bears if we’re lucky. It’s not the best season for them but there’s a slim chance. Seeing Northern Lights at that time is looking unlikely but maybe a trip to Yellowknife will sort that out.

Yesterday Glen was at home because it was his academic day. This meant having to share a chair, and the house, during the day. Consequently I didn’t do very much but we did get to have lunch together and go food shopping. The downside of having him home was watching the debacle of making pumpkin scones. The dough was sticky, the mat not floured and my hands got covered in orange goo. Glen laughed, I got annoyed, not good. On the plus side, the scones turned out edible and he took them to work today. They were devoured.

Last night we went to all-you-can-eat sushi for Pauline’s birthday. About 16 people were there and the restaurant was packed. We’ve never seen it that busy. The way it works there is you write down the number of the dish you want and how many pieces and then give the piece of paper to the waiter and they bring it out.

The food was a bit slow to come out to begin with so we did what anyone else would do. We ordered more. And then it came out like a flood. Suddenly there were thirty pieces of sashimi on the table and five teriyaki chickens. By that stage though, we were a bit full so hurriedly asked the waiter to cancel all remaining food. Quite full by the end, plus there was a delicious cake that Kevin had brought.

I hurt my back at the gym today. Lifted something incorrectly and felt it go nngngngn. I’m still able to walk, which is a plus, though it hurts a little bit. Unfortunately a three-hour nap this afternoon didn’t get rid of it so I’ll be dosing myself up with painkillers again.

  1. The way it works there is you right down the number of the dish (sorry Dan – couldn’t resist!)
